Place
Duong Lam
Phung Hung's home by the Complete Annals, in Giao Chau. The Cuong muc changes the prefecture to Phong Chau, matches it to Cam Lam commune, Phuc Tho district, Son Tay province under the Nguyen, and records that Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen were both men of that commune.
At a glance
- Also known as
- Cam Lam commune — by the Cuong muc's note, according to the registers of Son Tay province the commune of Cam Lam was once called Duong Lam1
- Location
- The Complete Annals put Duong Lam in Giao Chau, with a small note placing it in Phuc Loc district; the Cuong muc calls Giao Chau a mistake and changes it to Phong Chau, and notes that the Phuc Loc district of the old histories has now (in the nineteenth century) been renamed Phuc Tho, in Son Tay province21
About the place
The old chronicles say
The Complete Annals, under the year Tan Mui, record that in summer, in the fourth month, Phung Hung, a man of Duong Lam in Giao Chau, raised troops and besieged the protectorate seat; a small note in the book places Duong Lam in Phuc Loc district. By the same entry, Phung Hung and his younger brother Phung Hai had brought the neighbouring villages under their control since around the Dali era, and later took up the plan of a man from their own village, Do Anh Han. Le Tung's general essay of 1514, printed at the front of the Complete Annals, calls him a hero of the land of Duong Lam.23
How later ages remembered
The Cuong muc corrects his home: the Complete Annals say Giao Chau, the Cuong muc calls that a mistake and changes it to Phong Chau. Its note adds that the Phuc Loc district of the old histories has now been renamed Phuc Tho, in Son Tay province, and that by that province's registers the commune of Cam Lam was once called Duong Lam. Then one sentence: Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen were both men of that commune, and there are temples to them there now. This time now means the nineteenth century, not today.1
