Pham Van

Pham Van of Lam Ap, who according to the Thuy kinh chu (in Li Daoyuan's own words) attacked Nhat Nam, Cuu Duc and Cuu Chan in 344, so that the common people fled in every direction, and only then went back to Lam Ap. This scene exists only in the Chinese histories — the Complete Annals do not have his name at all.

The old chronicles say

The heaviest scene about Lam Ap in this period is in the Thuy kinh chu. Li Daoyuan records that in the second year of the Jianyuan era of the Jin, that is, 344, Pham Van of Lam Ap attacked Nhat Nam, Cuu Duc and Cuu Chan; the common people fled in every direction; for a thousand li there was no smoke from a cooking fire; and only then did he go back to Lam Ap. That scene exists only in the Chinese histories: the Complete Annals do not have the name Pham Van at all. The Lam Ap raids they do record fall in the years 399, 413, 415, 420, and 431.¹²
