Ly Thien Bao

By the Complete Annals, Ly Nam De's elder brother (the Viet su luoc calls him his son), who founded the kingdom of Da Nang at the head of the Dao river after a defeat drove him into Di Lao territory, and called himself Dao Lang Vuong; he died in 555 without an heir, and Ly Phat Tu was raised in his place.

Life

The old chronicles say

By the Complete Annals, Ly Thien Bao was Ly Nam De's elder brother. When Ly Bi took refuge in the Khuat Lao grotto, he and his kinsman general Ly Phat Tu led thirty thousand people into Cuu Chan; pursued and beaten by Tran Ba Tien, he gathered the ten thousand men he had left and fled into the territory of the Di Lao people on the border of Ai Lao. Finding the grotto of Da Nang, at the head of the Dao river, wide and fertile, he built a citadel there, took the name of the place as his kingdom's name, and called himself Dao Lang Vuong.1

In 555 Dao Lang Vuong died with no heir, and they all raised Ly Phat Tu up in his place — the man who had gone into Cuu Chan with him years before. So by the Complete Annals, after Ly Nam De there were two lines of succession at once: Trieu Viet Vuong at Long Bien, and a small kingdom of the Ly family to the west. Even Dao Lang Vuong's origin does not hold steady: the Viet su luoc calls him Ly Bi's son, not his elder brother.12
