Life
The old chronicles say
About two hundred years after Si Nhiep’s death, Pei Songzhi wrote a commentary on the Tam quoc chi, and set down at the foot of Si Nhiep’s biography a story taken from Ge Hong’s Shenxian zhuan, a book about immortals: the immortal Dong Phung bringing Si Nhiep back to life after he had been dead of illness for three days. This is a commentator’s note, and the commentator named his source plainly: a book about immortals. The Complete Annals later lift the story into the main text, changing the source book to the Liexian zhuan and Dong Phung’s courtesy name to Xuong Di.13
Pei Songzhi’s commentary also quotes Sun Sheng, a man of the fourth century, rebuking Lu Dai outright over the killing of Si Huy and his brothers: Huy and his brothers had given themselves over wholeheartedly to his command; Dai took the chance to destroy them for the sake of merit, and from this the gentleman knows that Sun Quan had no far-sighted plans. The main text of Si Nhiep’s biography tells how Lu Dai had Huy promised that he would lose his office but have nothing else to fear, and then killed him and his brothers, six men.24
